BJU is no ordinary Christian school. It is the flagship university of American fundamentalism (some in the BJU community prefer “fortress”). Its influence extends far beyond its student body, which is estimated to be about 3,000 undergraduates. It has numerous feeder schools in pockets across the country, runs its own K-12 school in Greenville and is one of the largest publishers of Christian textbooks in the America. The university’s presidents have been philosophical leaders of the fundamentalist movement, and its graduates go on to lead thousands of churches, colleges and seminaries across America.
“I can tell you within 10 minutes of being in a church whether or not there’s been a Bob Jones influence,” says Leah Gore, who graduated BJU in 2000.
But in one way, BJU is just like many of its Christian and secular siblings across the country: it has a sexual assault problem.

Fundy Bumper Sticker of the Week
An alert SFL reader spotted this car at a stoplight and snapped a picture.
I’m always a bit confused as to what the point of this kind of sign is. If this is outreach then what exactly does the driver want other motorists to do with this information?
I’m more convinced that signs like these are more analogous to flying Alabama flags of the sides of your car during football season. It’s just a way to identify which team you’re rooting for. “Go AVs!” “Hurrah old 1611!” “Git ’em KJV!”
Living in the Greatest Country in the History of Mankind
Today some people will celebrate the quiet courage and brave sacrifices that the men and women of our military have made over the years. Still other people will do stuff like this:
I had no idea that anybody else who was proud of their country was only imitating American patriotism.
Writing Week Day #5: Five More Quick Things
Here are five more quick things I’ve learned about blogging in the last five years:
1. Pick how frequently you’ll post and then stick to it. Good blogging is a job and has to be treated like one.
2. Write short. Short stuff gets read.
3. Perfect isn’t the goal; practice is. Learning how to do what you do is never over.
4. In writing, big enough failures are their own kind of success.
5. Stay on topic. For an example of what happens when you don’t, look at the engagement level on this week’s posts.
Thanks for putting up with Writing Week, folks. We’ll be back to the regularly scheduled insanity soon.
