    The fundamentalism in which I grew up was so afraid that people will believe in the benign-teddy-bear God that they ended up emphasizing the wrath and justice of God and downplaying His grace and love. They THOUGHT they had achieved the right balance because they did TALK about His love for us, but their constant emphasis on keeping multitudinous standards instead showed us a God who might tolerate us but certainly didn’t delight in us. It’s been wonderful to get to know the Abba Father.

    (I picked up a copy of The Ragamuffin Gospel a week or so ago.)

  12. In Abba’s Child, Manning wrote of falling asleep while praying. He described it as crawling up in Abba’s lap and falling asleep in his arms. That picture of grace and love has stuck with me ever since. That’s what Manning did the other day.

I’ll never forget the quote by this man which was on the Jesus Freak DC Talk CD I secretly listened to during my Fundy youth…the quote was “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, but walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” – Brennan Manning

  14. About 7 or 8 years ago, as I walked into the local library, one of the librarians told me that the book I had ordered had come in. The only thing was: I hadn’t ordered any book. That book was “The Ragimuffin Gospel” and since I had heard about it I took it home and read it. Devoured it was more like it, I couldn’t put it down. To say that it changed my life would be an understatement. Anyone that grew up Fundy should read it. Breath of fresh air, freeing, And convicting. The man came from a lot different background than we did but at the same time, not so different either. He was human and had his struggles but at some level that makes his writing all the more powerful.

  15. I’m getting ready to go on vacation. I’m going to go buy his ragamuffin gospel book and give it a read while I’m gone. Looks like amazing stuff.

  17. Abba’s Child and Ragamuffin’s Gospel was the beginning of my understanding of grace and what real Christianity was suppose to be.
