What crime prompted these epistles? What shortcoming was so deserving of the attention of the administraton? The recipient of these letters reports:
“I was a good little freshmen (only 11 demerits), but they found out that I liked CCM because they heard me discussing it with some other students. Even though I didn’t listen to CCM while school was in session, they felt my attitude and views were grounds for spiritual probation.”
Egads. I think probation was lenient given the circumstances.
When Claire Gordon wrote a piece for Al Jazeera America about Bob Jones University tell rape victims to apologize to their attackers the response was almost inevitable.
Apparently, if you allow a British journalist working for an American-managed news organization to use one of the few remaining copies of a video that that a fundamentalist school has worked hard to remove from the Internet then the terrorists win.
I suppose that not all truth is God’s truth after all.
Dramatic productions on Fundy U Campuses always create an odd tension as people who like to believe that 1950’s America is the gold standard for all things godly are forced to grapple with the realization that people didn’t always dress, cut their hair, or do their makeup the same way Jimmy Stewart did.
On the one hand, they tacitly admit that standards of dress are culturally relative — otherwise they’re forcing their students to sin by dressing up in costumes that don’t meet the dress code in the rule book. On the other hand, they simply can’t admit that their own culture has long since moved away from preferences and that fighting the culture wars of the 1960’s is no longer a good use of their time.
(And in case anybody wonders, I have no problem at all with the costuming here. These guys are rocking it.)
