I’d imagine the guidebooks describe this intersection as “Two streets that only every turn right forming a couple of very large squares.”

Morning
Ah, up early, and only second.
Oh what a beautiful morning!
And fundies will swear up and down that they don’t worship men…
Josh, to follow that logic we will have to unname any street, building, bridge, or any structure named after an individual. Personally, I say we start with any thing named after Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abe Lincoln, people worship them like they are important. π
To follow what logic? Your post is the one that makes no sense.
Always.
John Smith: We know there is man worship at North Valley Baptist Church. This is the same pastor who dared to substitute himself in the place of “Lord” in the 23 Psalm.
At least the two men these streets were name after were decent men and theologically sound…unlike some of their contemporaries.
But when a church venerates mannogids, stuff like this becomes a sin to them.
Don’t rename the MLK roads. To paraphrase Chris Rock, they help us know where the bad part of town is. π
I wonder how much they charged for the bricks to pave these streets…
Gold bricks are not cheap.
What? No Jack Hyles Avenue? No Jack Schaap boulevard? π
Only at HAC and FBCH. When the scandals broke, in the eighties and nineties, Bill Rice Ranch removed JH’s name from a building. As if anyone cares what goes on at the BRR….
Ah, Grace Livingston Hill – never has one woman received so much mileage from one story.
Okay, I am totally missing the GLH connection to this blog post, BUT I did LOL at your comment! Actually, GLH has two themes. Bad female meets good male, is eventually redeemed. Bad male meets good female, is eventually redeemed. Endings usually resut in wealth and happiness, with the occasional venture into poverty and happiness, to see if it would sell, one supposes.
..
The GLH reference is in the hovertext.
Ah! I was on my iPad when I posted. I can see it, now! Thanks.
OK, I keep forgetting to look for the hovertext, and on the days I remember, the post is an embedded video. Do all posts except videos have hovertext? (At least as far back as “Ddaareel” started using hovertext?) Do any videos have hovertext? Is it even possible to add hovertext to an embedded video? Did I spell hovertext correctly?
My sister had all the GLH books and read every last one. Her English teacher would only let her do one book report on one book. Smart teacher.
GLH wasn’t so bad, but her characters tend to be one dimensional. Either all good or all bad, no shades of gray. π
Poor Grace. She was compensating for a miserable marriage.
Shucks! I hope you are kidding. I mean, to have a lousy marriage plus write lousy books is really too much for one soul to bear.
Not kidding, Seen Enough. I read her biography once when we were in a prophet’s chamber on deputation.
Wow. That IS sad. π
Susan, you just earned 5 points of fundy cred for that statement.
So is this a legit road sign? I’m curious to see what the other surrounding road names are. I’m not having any luck finding this on google maps.
This is the GSBC campus. I know, because I went there, and saw these signs every day. π
Where is this intersection located?
Theses are the streets named after them in Heaven. Stay on Malone Ave until you get to R.G. Lee Way, which is the street right after the stop-and-go lights at the intersection of Malone and John R. Rice Street. Anyway, take a left on R.G. Lee Way, go past Mama Hyles Boulevard, and on your right, just before the dead end, is Jesus Court. It’s just a cul-de-sac because Jesus is so humble He lets everyone else put their names on the more important streets.
Once again, epic, Eric.
This is the GSBC campus. I know, because I went there, and saw these signs every day.
My guess would have been Hell
love it…only I’m not sure anymore if I even believe in hell.
I remember that in GLH’s world women who wore make up were bad and those who did not were good.
And in her world daycares were filthy nasty places where no one would leave their children!
Black people were terribly stereotyped but I suppose that was the age in which she lived.
Back on topic: Are you kidding me? That place exists?
Off topic again: I remember that girls who wore tan hosiery were bad, and girls who wore white were good. π
And they always started out poor and humble but by the end a rich uncle or someone had died and left them a fortune to live on, showing us that by the time you realize true love you also are financially set for life if you don’t wear make up or tan hose.
I do know that in my own life, tan hose has always led to wild debauchery.
Seen Enough, meet me at 5:00. You bring the tan hose; I’ll bring the root beer in brown bottles. π
I LOLed so hard that I broke out into a fit of coughing. Autumn allergies, a quiet library, and your comments may NOT be the safest combo! π
BG, nice one.
I cropped out the fundy girls congregating underneath the sign in their knee and ankle-length skirts and hosiery. You’re welcome.
It is generous of you to be so thoughtful!
I sometimes think Fundies are one generation away from the burqa. But they’d probably wear white burqas. π
I am of the BJU fundy variety. Could someone fill me in as to the importance of these names?

“Well we know where we’re goin’
But we don’t know where we’ve been
Fnd we know what we’re knowin’
But we can’t say what we’ve seen
And we’re not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out
We’re on a ride to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin’ that ride to nowhere
We’ll take that ride
I’m feelin’ okay this mornin’
And you know,
We’re on the road to paradise
Here we go, here we go
[CHORUS]
Maybe you wonder where you are
I don’t care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there…take you there
We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere
There’s a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
and it’s all right, baby, it’s all right
And it’s very far away
But it’s growing day by day
And it’s all right, baby, it’s all right
Would you like to come along
And to help me sing this song
And it’s all right, baby, it’s all right
They can tell you what to do
But they’ll make a fool of you
And it’s all right, baby, it’s all right
We’re on a road to nowhere”

Ah, but Darrell, Do you remember the GLH storyline? I do. π
Sims, WAKE UP! We already told the GLH themes up there. Tut tut, I know it is early there, but suck down some more java and wade through these posts, ESPECIALLY MINE. Slightly miffed, here… *I* look for *YOURS* FIRST!!!
π
Sorry. I got so excited about the GLH hovertext that I just posted. THEN I went and read how all you East Coasters were HOURS ahead of me here. Anyhoo, yes dahling, I look for YOURS first and THEN I read everyone else’s. Just as it should be. Here is the order I read… YOU, Eric, Don, Big Gary, Monipenny, Boymomm, Everyone else. Now I have to go for awhile, so don’t say anything TOO interesting until I get back.
I promise to only post boring things… I read yours first, then go either up to the top, or to the bottom, and read in order, either down from the top, or up from the bottom.
I’m changing my name to “Everyone Else”.
π π
Stony just got put into the list ahead of Everyone Else!
Honalulu!!
For those who are wondering these signs are up on the campus of Golden State Baptist College/North Valley Baptist.
So you won’t find them on Google Maps. π
There’s a trend lately here– I never saw it until I moved to far south Texas, but it’s probably in other places, too– to just name streets (or sidewalks, or garden paths, or whatever you’ve got) yourself, without waiting for official approval.
Let’s say your name is, oh, Darrell Dow, for example. You just buy a sign that says “Darrell Dow Boulevard” (or whatever you want) and put it up at the end of your driveway.
On one hand, I like the democratic nature of this practice. On the other hand, it does seem a trifle vain.
In any case, it was pretty confusing a couple of years ago when I was doing address mapping for the Census Bureau in neighborhoods that did not have well-marked streets to begin with.
Up the highway a little ways from where I live there is a street named “Keep Out”. It is on a street sign and looks official. I took a picture of it for my facebook page because I thought it was funny. (and captioned it something like, “Adjacent to Drop Dead avenue”) Anyway, you just explained how they got that sign. Thank you. Another mystery of the universe revealed.
fortunately they are still standing for the truth π₯
in case you missed the sarcasm, click the link and notice that KING JAMES BIBLE is in 6 times larger font than any of the important doctrine they hold.
Barely. I think they moved their campus to a local IFB church. Malone’s old church took residence at the campus of MBC. I’m not sure if that church still exists.
As it was, the college was a complete joke when I went there. I lasted one semester and got out as quickly as I could. I owe them a debt of gratitude for showing me how dangerous the IFB movement was and leading me out of it sooner than I would have left without that exposure.
I’ve been to this campus a few times, unfortunately, and I immediately recognized it as GSBC.
You can go here to see what looks like John R Rice (something)…
The driveway on the north side of the campus is named “Romans Rd”.
Lancaster Baptist Church also has a Romans Road, unless they have renamed it since I left.
wow.
Have you ever realized that you’ve gotten lost and are in a baaaad neighborhood? I think I’d be rolling up the windows & locking the doors if I saw these street names. π
According to legend Robert Johnson became a master Delta Blues guitarist at his crossroads… Wonder what one gets at this crossroad? -The Callβ’ to preach?
-The filling of the Spirit?
-One becomes a master hymnologist/White Piano player?
I choose Door Number Three, Monty!!!
Johnson said that’s where he sold his soul to the devil.
Ralph Machios movie abotu it makes you beleive.
Believe that Steve Vai is AWESOEM that is! (And Ry Cooder is even BETTER)
Awesome that is.
George !
It’s only tangentially related, but last year I stayed in the hotel in San Antonio where Robert Johnson made his most famous recordings. I didn’t know it was the same hotel until I checked in and saw a plaque in the lobby. I asked which room he recorded in, and made a tiny pilgramage upstairs to look at the room (I couldn’t go in, though, because another guest was staying in that room.)
I posted it previously in response to John Smith, but just so no one misses it, here is a link to a prior SFL article about the man-worship at North Valley Baptist Church:
Jack Trieber’s twist on the 23rd Psalm “The Pastor is my shepherd, I shall not want”
Utterly evil. πΏ
The title made me think of a song we used to sing on the bus. “I met Jesus at the crossroads, where the two ways meet…”, but I probably have read that GLH book – they all blend together.
I think it was the one where a young mother got into a fight with her husband and then left to go somewhere (I forget the details) and got into a little accident and came home and because her hand was cut she took off her wedding rings and laid them on the dresser. After she left the house again she got amnesia and when he got home he thought she had left him… He was too proud to go looking for her and she ended up living in a house with some nice family she met who took her in. Once she ran into her husband and he recognized her but she didn’t recognize him so he scared her by calling her by her real name (because she had been going by a different name all along) He hired her to be the nanny to his kids and when she was at his house being the nanny to her own kids (who didn’t remember her because they were too little when she left) her memory started to return. It was a HORRIBLE story, and I read it several times.
oh my word, that is one of the worst contrived and fully awful plots I’ve ever heard. I’m ROFL . . . I don’t think I ever read GLH. My parents allowed Tolkein and what’s his name – George MacDonald. Although he seemed to have the same plot over and over, too.
My *FAVORITE* part of Sims’ post is “I read it several times.” I LOLed so hard I cried.
There is an official street named John R. Rice Boulevard in Murfreesboro, Tn.
Lived there, many years ago. In fact, I lived IN one of the homes he owned.
I get angry when I see money spent on frivolous things like these street signs (as if they are important to the work of God.)That money could have been well spent on giving to the poor or (real) missions. I’m also curious how much money it takes to have these street signs made. Anyone know?
More than a dinner for 100 homeless is that community.
*in that community. George.
You should hear how much they spent on their 4 Busendorfer grand pianos on their platform…White ones, of course.
On the other hand, whenever I hear someone like that, I can only think of John 12:5-6. Sometimes things that look like extravagant wastes are perfectly ok.
Not that these signs fall under that category, of course.
But, street signs glorifying a man? Something is amiss.
